If your organisation hires out space as a community venue, for example church halls, sports clubs or community centres, then you may be eligible for government support.
There are two different funds: the Small Business Grants Fund (SBGF) and the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Fund (RHLF). Somewhat unhelpfully the guidance for both is in one document. Charities will not qualify for the Small Business Grant Fund*, but may be eligible for the Retail Hospitality and Leisure Fund.
The guidance says “Under the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant (RHLG) eligible businesses in England in receipt of the Expanded Retail Discount (which covers retail, hospitality and leisure) with a rateable value of less than £51,000 will be eligible for a cash grants of £10,000 or £25,000 per property.” And the guidance explicitly includes charities that meet this eligibility criteria. So if you think your organisation may qualify, then please apply for this grant via the Reigate & Banstead Borough Council website here. (If you have been turned down, then consider appealing as many decisions made early on against charities are now being reversed. Reigate & Banstead Borough council is encouraging voluntary and community organisations with premises to apply.)
(To find out the rateable value of your premises visit the Valuation Office Agency website here)
* Additional funding has been released under “LA’s Discretionary Grants Fund” for small businesses and charities that do not qualify for the Small Business Grant Fund or the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Fund. It is expected that this will be open to charities with properties that are receiving charities business rates relief – however please note that every LA will be expected to apply its own criteria. Further details here.
