Jaime’s Story “I’ve got to meet a lot of new people who are lovely”

“I’m a Hands-Face-Space volunteer at East Surrey Hospital. I’m either at the front entrance or East entrance and I make sure people use hand sanitiser and put on masks if they can – obviously some people are exempt.

“I started in September 2021. It was the pandemic and I had some spare time. Since than I have mostly volunteered every one to two weeks. Shifts are usually for five hours, but if I can’t do the full five hours I just let them know.

“When I volunteer, I’m with the security staff and I’ve got to know the desk ladies who are really lovely. In fact, I have got to meet a lot of new people who are lovely.

“I have enjoyed volunteering, especially at a time when it’s harder to get a job. At College I’m part of the student union and get involved in organising events. I’m planning to go to university to study Business. I didn’t think of volunteering as work experience at the time but now I think it is about people management. You have some people who don’t want to really follow the rules. You get some people who thank you as they leave the door. Everyone at the hospital is dealing with a lot of stuff and you have to take it easy on people. You get to see a lot of different life stages.”
