Michelle’s Story “I feel part of something”

Michelle’s Story “I feel part of something”

“I volunteer for Furnistore, a charity which provides affordable pre-used furniture and household goods to those in need. Last year I started doing an AAT accountancy course and then this Volunteer Bookkeeping role came up. I started in October 2021 and go in once a week.

“I work in retail and as an essential worker, I worked throughout the pandemic. I also shopped for people who were housebound. As things started to open up, I decided I wanted to continue using my day off in the week. I felt low after the pandemic and wanted to meet people while at the same time gaining some experience and fulfilling my need to do something for the greater good.

“I’m a lone parent and needed something that would fit around my other commitments.

“At Furnistore, I have had such a warm welcome. They have given me confidence in what I can do and the opportunity to gain some experience. They’re supportive and friendly.

“It is good to meet new people and volunteering has played a big part in that. I feel part of something, helping people who have been hit by hard times. I feel happier because I’m doing some positive things for others, for myself and for my family.”
