Breastfeeding Peer Supporter
Spelthorne Breastfeeding Friends has been established to recruit and train volunteer supporters from the Borough of Spelthorne to befriend, help, support and encourage mothers, primarily around the feeding of their babies, but also in other practical ways.
Are you kind? Are you a good listener? Are you trustworthy and approachable? Are you open-minded? Are you dedicated? Do you have a passion for supporting and promoting breastfeeding? Have you the time to commit to regular volunteering?Â
Sound like you? Great – we would love you to join our team of enthusiastic Breastfeeding Peer Supporters.
A Breastfeeding Peer Supporter is a mum who has breastfed and /or provided breastmilk for her child for at least 3 months, who has undertaken a Peer Supporters training course. No previous knowledge is necessary before training, we just ask that you have the experience of having breastfed your own baby.
We welcome all ages to train (young mothers / grandmothers), all we ask is that you can commit to at least 200 hours of volunteering after completing the training. Â
Training consists of 30 hours informal, interactive sessions followed by attendance at a minimum of 4 supervision sessions a year.  You will have the opportunity to volunteer in a variety of community settings, alongside midwives and health visitors and other organisations working with families as well as on the postnatal ward of Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital.
Through training you’ll learn about how breastfeeding works, responsive feeding, milk supply and you’ll also pick up lots of information on positioning and attachment, confidentiality, boundaries and listening and communication skills.Â
Our next training course is in April 2023 and would love for you to join us.
