Community Garden Volunteer
The Elmbridge Community Eco Hub (“The Hub’) is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) that is focussed upon building a strong and environmentally sustainable local community. We draw upon local people’s skills and resources, to help reduce waste going to landfill and our carbon emissions, by ‘reducing, re-using, repairing, recycling, growing, sharing and giving’ the goods and materials that we use in our everyday lives.
The Hub is a community project with no paid workers. It is entirely dependent on the time, commitment and good-will of local people and businesses. You will be part of an exciting and innovative community project. We have secured a long term lease on a plot of land which is approximately ¼ acre in size. Our aim is to create a Community Garden, growing vegetables, fruit and herbs for volunteers and the community to eat, flowers for us all to enjoy, a sensory area to relax in, a small pond for wildlife whilst maintaining a small wild meadow to encourage natural pollinators .
The role will involve you in helping to clear the land, making it ready for planting - following an agreed design - cutting grass, removing weeds, trimming hedges, watering plants, using hand and power tools, and working as part of a team.
What skills do I need?
No formal qualifications or skills are required for this role, but at the initial stages of the project I.E. whilst we are developing it, we will be seeking volunteers who are reasonably fit and able-bodied as the role will involve lifting, bending and twisting. As the garden progresses a variety of other less physically demanding roles will become available.
A very basic knowledge of gardening would be an advantage but we welcome everyone to come and join us on this long-term project.
