Citizens Advice Surrey Heath is a local charity that provides advice and information, plus related support, to help residents find solutions to the problems they face, whatever their problem is and whoever they are.  Our advice is free, confidential, impartial and independent.

We currently have an annual turnover of c.£250,000 with funding coming from grants, project work and fundraising. We employ 11 staff and have around 35 volunteers.  We are looking for a Treasurer/Trustee (preferably a qualified Accountant)  who is prepared to get involved in guiding and advising the board in the approval of budgets, accounts and financial statements and keeping them informed of their financial duties and responsibilities.

What will you be doing?

The role and responsibilities of the trustee will include:

●       Advising on the financial implications of the bureau’s strategic plans and key assumptions in the operational plan and budget.

●       Ensuring that all board members have a clear understanding of the accounts presented at meetings and the implications that they reveal

●       Understanding the accounting procedures and key internal controls to be able to assure the board that the charity’s financial integrity is sound

●       Ensuring that a realistic budget is produced which meets all the organisations’ needs and that there is an appropriate reserves policy.

●       Ensuring quarterly reports are prepared and presenting these to the board and that accounts are prepared at year-end in compliance with the SORP Accounting for Charities and independently examined, as required by the Charity Commission

●       Ensuring that annual accounts are submitted to the Charity Commission and/or Registrar of Companies within the deadlines set.

●       Liaising with the Chief Officer about financial matters and providing advice and support in order to ensure a clear fundraising strategy

What skills do I need?

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a qualified Accountant or someone with sound financial qualifications or experience. Some experience or knowledge of charity finance, fundraising and pension schemes would be an advantage, but more important are the skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences and a willingness to be available to staff to provide advice and guidance on financial matters.

What difference will you make?

One of the main roles of the Trustees is to ensure that the Charity is run on a sound financial basis. The key to being able to discharge this responsibility is to provide the Trustee Board with financial information and to provide timely commentary on the state of the organisation both as a whole and on a project by project basis.
