Trustee – Legal (CSVA)
Elmbridge Mencap is an independent registered charity, affiliated to Royal Mencap.
We are a local charity providing support to individuals with learning disabilities, by providing help for them and their families, dependants and carers, and providing recreation facilities with the object of improving their quality of life.
We manage Burview Hall, a purpose built facility offering a large hall, two sensory rooms, a games room and accessible garden and woodland. More information about our charity can be found on our website (www.elmbridge-mencap.btck.co.uk)
Elmbridge Mencap has a board of Trustees who have overall legal responsibility for the charity. Trustees form the Executive Committee who meet once a month (usually Mondays) to conduct the business of the charity – this will include ensuring that the charity remains within the law in conducting its business, that money is spent wisely and for the benefit of the charity; making decisions in accordance with the charity’s aims and objectives.
We are looking for a trustee who will be able to take the lead on the provision of legal advice. You will be expected to take the lead in reviewing our policies, and researching new areas of legislation as they apply to the charity.
You will need to have access to a computer and an email address. Meetings take place once a month at Burview Hall based in Walton on Thames, Surrey, however other areas of work e.g. policy drafting/amending, etc could be carried out at home. Trustees are expected to help with fundraising activities such as the annual Christmas Fair which take place at the hall and to attend relevant training and meetings/seminars.
What skills do I need?
A qualified solicitor, ideally we require someone who has worked with the charity/volunteer sector in a professional capacity and has experience of giving appropriate legal advice and guidance.
Trustees should show an understanding and commitment to the aims and objectives of our charity, and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
