Daybreak is a service for elderly, including those with dementia, and people with physical conditions which make it difficult for them to get out. It also provides a few hours of time off for carers of any of our guests. Daybreak runs on Tuesdays between 10.00- 3.00pm at St. Peters Church Hall, Laleham Road, Staines.

We have a team of volunteers, but are always looking for new recruits! The tasks volunteers help with are making/ serving refreshments and dinner, laying and clearing tables, washing up, helping our guests up out of their chairs to the dining tables or to the toilet. (We have some medically qualified volunteers who go with guests who need assistance in the toilet, so not all volunteers are needed to do this.)

Also sitting with guests who have dementia to help them if we are doing games/quizzes, helping with games generally, and last, but not at all least, chatting to our guests, especially those who find it more difficult to talk to their fellow guests. Volunteers are not required to be a Daybreak for the full day, morning/afternoon or even just over the lunchtime is helpful. Because we do have quite a large team of volunteers, it isn't a problem if you can't make a particular Tuesday due to another commitment.

The only essential qualities required in our volunteers are patience, kindness and respect for our guests. Some of our volunteers are physically fitter than others, and it isn't essential to be able to help guests up, but the more people we have who can manage this the better. Any other skills such as playing an instrument, being a singer would be a bonus.

As well as the satisfaction of knowing you have helped give someone an enjoyable, safe day out of their home, and a break for their carers, we have lots of fun with our guests, and within our team.
